FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
£25.00 per year. Probus is a national organisation with no staff or paid officers so there are few expenses, just meeting room hire and speakers.
The constitution says, “Membership shall be open to all men of goodwill without reference to age or situation of residence, who have fully or partially retired from their former occupation”
What activities are available?
As well as the fortnightly meetings in the autumn and winter months there are usually two other events. Both of these costs extra. The Ladies Day Outing is usually a full day coach trip, including lunch and a visit to a place of interest like Jodrell Bank, the Steam Railway etc. On one meeting in May we have ladies day when ladies are invited to meet with us in the morning and have lunch. Other than that, members with common interests like bowling, golf, walking and the like tend to group together informally.
What happens when I join?
One of our members will either bring you along or meet with you and guide you through the meeting. You can just turn up if you wish – you will be made welcome and looked after. You can attend three meetings for free without committing to membership.
Generally the meeting takes the form of “Checking in” (anytime after 10am), drinking coffee and chatting until 10-30ish when the meeting begins. There are the usual notices etc. followed by a speaker. About 12 noon we finish.
The fact is that all the people there are people just like you, with similar requirements of the organisation and indeed similar problems and constraints. It is amazing how the chatting reveals the solutions that others have found to problems. On the basis of the experience of others, I found a reliable alarm contractor, got some excellent advice on home insulation, and resolved a problem with my TV. I know that I saved much more than I spent by being a member!
Do I have to attend every meeting?
Of course not. However, if you miss more than four meetings someone will ring you to make sure that all is well. We do ask though that if you can’t attend, you send your apologies.
Yes, but nobody can remember what they are! You have to wear a name badge at every meeting so that people can remember who you are and in our secretaries case, remember his own name! We do have a constitution and every member has a copy.
